Spring Checklist


Spring is in the air and this time we want to take a minute and discuss items that you should check on every spring. We see the doctor and dentist every year for our health, we need to do the same for our home.

Many of the tasks are well within the realm of an average person’s abilities. However should you decide to hire someone to handle the tasks make sure they are qualified for the job and it never hurts to get a professionals opinion.

All problems are easy fixes when caught early on, save yourself the time and the hit to the wallet by regular maintenance performed at the very least semi-annually.

Clean Those Gutters!

One of the most important things you can do for your home’s health is cleaning your eavestrough. Gutters are a vital part in preventing damage to your home by diverting a large amount of water away from your property. Clogged gutters can and will cause many problems including damage to your exterior and interior walls, damage to your foundation and damage to your roof. The simple solution to avoid the big potential problems is to clean them at least once a year. The more they are cleaned the better they work and the easier it is to complete the task.

Seal Those Leaks!

Air leaks happen around entry points such as windows, doors, gas lines, electrical etc. Just one or two small cracks or gaps in caulking or weather stripping can make a big difference in your energy consumption and reduce your bills. Take the time to do a thorough walk around your home and seal whatever cracks you see.

Clean Those Filters!

Few things are more important than the air we breathe. Furnace filters work to clean the air and remove allergens and dust among other things. Clogged and dirty filters make our systems work harder in turn making our energy bills go up! Change or clean your filters frequently. We recommend changing your filters to re-usable ones, they are easy to clean and help our environment.

Renew Those Safety Plans!

This is the perfect time of year to re-evaluate your house safety equipment and make sure your fire escape plans are up to date! Check your fire extinguishers, the fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, refill first aid kits, update emergency contact numbers list and review plan A and plan B emergency exist strategies

Inspect Those Shingles!

Damaged or missing shingles can cause water leaks and a leaking roof can become a major and costly problem. Every home owner should inspect there shingles ever year. For a full list of what to look for please see our next article for ways to know how to determine if you need a new roof.

Organize Those Rooms!

Spring is in the air but you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to get your home organized. Instead of doing a spring cleaning day, try breaking it down into sections or into rooms. You can set it up any way you want but focus on only one section at a time and allow for 2-3 days per room. It’s much less overwhelming and a lot more gets accomplished when spread out!
